Best Ways to Unpack at Your New Home

Packing with child

Moving to a new home is an exciting event, however, the idea of unpacking your belongings afterward can be daunting. With some smart planning, it’s easy to make sure you have access to what you need right away, stay motivated throughout the unpacking process, and focus on enjoying your new home.

Do an Initial Cleaning

Even though you’ll likely want to dive into unpacking as soon as possible, it’s often a good idea to do a quick clean of your new home before unloading any boxes. Going over floors and surfaces with a cleaning spray and cloth is a quick task that can make a big difference in how fresh and clean your new house looks and feels before you make yourself at home.

Get Organized

Don’t just jump right into unpacking boxes willy-nilly– it pays to do a bit of planning beforehand. Think through each room in your new home and what items belong where then put boxes where they belong before opening them. Ideally, this can be done during the initial move-in process to avoid extra work later on.

Finish the Kitchen Early

One of the first rooms in your home that you should focus on unpacking is the kitchen. Unload and put away your pots, pans, dishes, cups, and silverware, as well as a coffee maker, toaster, or other items you use often. Being able to cook and eat food in your new house will make the space feel like home and allow you to save money by not relying solely on takeout for those first few days.

Don’t worry about organizing everything in your pantry and cupboards– all you need at first are the basics, and you can come back and finish the rest later.

Then Focus on Bedrooms and Bathrooms

The other two rooms in the home you should focus on unpacking as soon as possible are the bedrooms and bathrooms. Unpack your pillow and blankets so that you can enjoy a good night’s sleep on your first night in your new home. Similarly, unpack your most important toiletries in the bathroom so you can continue your usual routines with all of your medications, face and body products, towels, etc.

Don’t Forget the Decor

Even though they’re not essential, it’s a good idea to try and hang some photos and place special decor items early on in your unpacking process. Adding those personal touches to your new space will make the place feel more familiar and homey, which makes it easier to enjoy the unpacking process.

Have Kids Unpack Their Rooms

If you have kids, let them be in charge of unpacking their own rooms. This is a great way to help them feel more involved in the progress, and odds are they’ll be happy to see all of the toys and clothes that were previously packed away. Letting them actively participate in unpacking will also add to the excitement around their new home and room.

Leave Storage Areas for Last

If you have a garage, basement, or outdoor storage space, you can safely leave this until last. These spaces usually don’t have highly essential items and are often organized using boxes anyway. If you do have tools or any other items you think you may need, make sure to get those out in advance and keep them accessible.
